The key facts

  • Russian Ministry of Defense: on the night of November 8, a 330 kV substation in the Beloshitsy area of Zhytomyr Oblast was hit
  • The ministry claims the facility supplied electricity to enterprises of Ukraine's military-industrial complex
  • On November 7, a strike on another 330 kV substation in the same oblast was reported

Strike on the substation near Beloshitsy

Russia's Ministry of Defense reported that on the night of November 8, Russian unmanned aerial vehicles hit a 330 kV electrical substation located near the village of Beloshitsy in Zhytomyr Oblast. According to the defense ministry, the substation supplied electricity to enterprises of Ukraine's military-industrial complex. This was reported on November 8 by Life.ru and Gazeta.Ru citing the Ministry of Defense.

Second attack in two days

This is not the first such report in recent days: on November 7, the Ministry of Defense had already claimed the destruction of a high-voltage 330 kV substation in Zhytomyr Oblast which, according to the ministry, also supplied Ukraine's military-industrial complex. Earlier, on November 4, the ministry reported strikes on the Nalvaikovka and Chyzhovka substations in Kyiv and Zhytomyr oblasts — with voltages of 750 kV and 110 kV respectively.

What is known and what is missing

330 kV substations are major nodes of the power grid: they are used to transmit electricity and distribute it among industrial consumers. However, all information about the strike and its targets comes from the Russian Ministry of Defense; the sources contain no independent confirmation or data from the Ukrainian side on the extent of the damage or the consequences for the power supply. The Ukrainian authorities and the enterprises that allegedly received power from the substation are not named in the publications.
