Timeline of the tragedy in Novocheboksarsk
In Chuvashia, a car fell into the Tsivil River and sank with five people inside. The incident became known on the morning of November 8: the Telegram channel 112, citing a witness, reported that the car had driven off the road and gone underwater, and five rescuers and two pieces of equipment, including a watercraft, were deployed to the search. The outlet Life.ru specified that it was a Niva that had plunged off a cliff, and that it carried a group of three young men and two young women. According to the outlet, on the evening of November 6 they went for a drive in the outskirts of Novocheboksarsk and last made contact at around 22:00; when contact was lost, acquaintances checked the geolocation — the last point turned out to be near the river. The preliminary theory was that the driver had lost control.
Search and investigation
Over the course of the day, the picture became clearer. The regional Investigative Committee directorate reported that EMERCOM rescuers had recovered the bodies of three victims, while the whereabouts of two more were being established; in connection with the deaths a criminal case has been opened under Part 3 of Article 109 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation — causing death by negligence to two or more persons. The mayor of Novocheboksarsk, Alexander Alekseev, wrote in his channel on Max that, according to one theory, the young people had come to go fishing, and the car plunged off a cliff in the industrial zone area. Later he reported that rescuers had raised the car itself from the river bottom, with the bodies of two more victims inside— thus all five have been found, and the search operation is complete. According to the mayor, the car was driven by a 22-year-old resident of Novocheboksarsk, and the vehicle lay at a depth of four meters. Investigators are working at the scene to establish the circumstances of the incident; the exact reasons for the car falling into the water had not been named as of the time of publication.
