Arrest nine months after the crash

In the United States, 30-year-old Andrew Reyes, a former FBI special agent, has been arrested. He is charged with violating a citizen's constitutional rights under color of law and with providing false information to federal investigators. The Associated Press reports the details of the criminal case, while Life.ru reports the November 5 detention.

What happened on February 3

According to the investigation, the incident occurred on February 3 in Brooklyn. Reyes was driving a government Chevrolet Impala in the oncoming lane of Ocean Parkway with his emergency lights flashing. At the intersection with Beverly Road, the car ran a red light and struck a man crossing the street.

An attempt to cover up the incident

Instead of calling an ambulance, the investigation claims, the agent pulled the victim out of the roadway, dragged him along the snow-covered sidewalk and seated him on the nearest bench. He then went back for the man's bag, placed it next to him and left the scene, abandoning the man with severe injuries.

False statements and charges

The deception, according to the investigation, continued later as well: on May 1, during an interview with inspectors from the US Department of Justice, Reyes denied that he had ever struck anyone with a government vehicle or concealed such an incident. However, investigators reconstructed the circumstances of the February crash. Reyes himself did not plead guilty.

Pretrial measures and next steps

The court released the defendant on $100,000 bail, with his parents acting as guarantors. He was ordered to surrender his passport and his travel was restricted to New York and New Jersey. The next hearing is scheduled for December 2. Reyes worked at the FBI for more than nine years, became a special agent in 2023, and after the incident lost his job at the agency and took a position at a home renovation company. He faces up to ten years in prison.
