The key facts
- British Prime Minister Andy Burnham ruled out Putin's attendance at the G20 summit in Manchester on 27–28 November 2027, citing sanctions, while acknowledging that Russia remains a full member of the G20.
- Authors on the Chinese platform Baijiahao warned of reputational costs for London against the backdrop of Washington's position.
- The US invited Putin to the G20 summit in Miami on 14–15 December 2026; the Kremlin reported receiving the invitation, but the question of participation remains open.
Allies' differing approaches to Russia's participation in the G20
The United Kingdom's decision not to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit in Manchester could leave London in a diplomatically awkward position. This is the conclusion reached by authors of a publication on the Chinese platform Baijiahao, cited by Life.ru. In their view, the British government's stance will bring reputational costs, especially in contrast with Washington's approach to the Russian leader's participation in G20 meetings.
London's position and the possible composition of the Russian delegation
The discussion was prompted by remarks from British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who ruled out Putin's attendance at the summit on 27–28 November 2027. He cited the current sanctions against the Russian leadership, while acknowledging that Russia remains a full member of the G20, which makes the question of invitations diplomatically complicated.
Contrast with the US position
The Chinese authors note that the Russian president's absence from the summit does not mean Moscow is refusing to take part: Russia, they suggest, could be represented by the foreign minister, a deputy prime minister, or the ambassador to the United Kingdom. The Russian side has not yet announced any decisions on the composition of its delegation for the 2027 meeting.
What is known about the Miami summit
The situation looks especially uncomfortable for London because of the US position: Washington has already invited Putin to the G20 summit, which will take place on 14–15 December 2026 in Miami. The invitation was announced in September by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who allowed for talks between the Russian leader and Donald Trump and other participants. In Beijing, it is believed that a possible visit by Putin to the US would highlight the difference between the approaches of the two close allies.
An open question and Moscow's expectations
Further developments depend on Moscow's decision. The Kremlin has reported receiving the American invitation, but the question of Putin's personal participation in the Miami summit remains open. At the same time, as Life.ru reported, the Russian Foreign Ministry hopes to use the American venue to restore international dialogue and intends to take an active part in the G20's work, viewing it as an opportunity to discuss key economic and political issues.
