Statements by the leaders of the two countries
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said he expects concrete results from the process of normalizing relations between Baku and Yerevan. According to him, Armenia and Azerbaijan initialed the peace agreement more than a year ago, but the final signatures have not yet been put on it. Aliyev's remarks were reported by RIA Novosti, as covered by Gazeta.Ru.
Timeline from Yerevan
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said at a government meeting that he expects to sign and ratify the peace treaty with Azerbaijan by 2031. Thus, the sides differ in their assessment of the pace of the process: Aliyev emphasizes the prolonged absence of final signatures, while Pashinyan points to a distant horizon — the end of the decade.
Context: The Washington Declaration
On August 8, 2025, Pashinyan and Aliyev in Washington, with the participation of the United States, signed a declaration on the cessation of hostilities. The agreement provides, among other things, for the opening of a corridor that would connect Azerbaijan with Nakhchivan through Armenian territory and would be controlled by the United States. Earlier, Pashinyan also proposed a territorial exchange to Azerbaijan.
