The key facts

  • Zelensky said only 4 of 36 ballistic missiles were intercepted and urged the US to speed up interceptor deliveries
  • Earlier, on November 1, he already demanded an urgent resolution of the deal for 500 PAC-3 missiles worth $2.1 billion
  • Kyiv is seeking about 100 interceptors per month

A new appeal to Washington

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has once again asked the United States to speed up deliveries of missiles for Patriot air defense systems. The reason, as Life.ru reports, was the results of the overnight attack: according to Zelensky, Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept only four of the 36 missiles that flew on ballistic trajectories. He published the appeal on the social network X, admitting that interceptor stockpiles remain insufficient, and once again named the United States as the main country capable of fixing the situation. “We hope that the United States, like our other partners, will act in accordance with the principles,” he wrote.

Attack on the energy sector and repeated requests

Zelensky linked the need for additional deliveries to preparations for winter and upcoming negotiations on settling the conflict, and also stated that North Korean-made KN-23 missiles were used in the strike on one of the key energy facilities. Life.ru previously reported on a massive overnight attack on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, after which Kyiv experienced interruptions in electricity, heating and water supply; the Russian Defense Ministry, for its part, said it had struck energy, transport and military-industrial facilities used to support Ukrainian troops.

Dispute over the timeline of the 500-missile deal

This is not the first such appeal: back on November 1, Zelensky demanded that the American authorities urgently find additional Patriot missiles, as he was dissatisfied with the expected timeline for fulfilling the deal to purchase 500 PAC-3 interceptors worth $2.1 billion. Kyiv had hoped to receive the ammunition in the coming winter, but, according to the politician, the deliveries could stretch over several years. As an alternative, he proposed transferring missiles from active American stockpiles and later replenishing them through new production; the Ukrainian side is seeking to receive approximately 100 interceptors per month. Thus, the new appeal repeats the demand Kyiv has been making for at least a week and concerns the same deal, not a new agreement.
