The key facts

  • Nausėda supported the referendum on enshrining in the Constitution the concept of the family based on the marriage of a man and a woman
  • The advisory vote is proposed to be held in March 2027 together with municipal elections
  • The initiative was introduced to the Seimas in March 2026 but stalled in the relevant committees

The President backed putting the family question to a referendum

President of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda supported the initiative to hold a referendum on enshrining in the Constitution the concept of the family based on the marriage of a man and a woman, motherhood and fatherhood. This was reported by the Lithuanian agency BNS, which Life.ru cites. According to the authors' plan, citizens will be asked whether they agree that family legal relations should arise exclusively from the marriage of a man and a woman, motherhood and fatherhood. Nausėda believes that the country's residents should have the opportunity to express their position on this issue.

The fate of the initiative in parliament remains undecided

A group of deputies introduced the initiative to the Lithuanian Seimas back in March 2026. In April, parliamentarians supported it at the preliminary stage, but further consideration stalled in the relevant committees. The advisory vote is proposed to be held in March 2027 simultaneously with municipal elections, but no final decision on holding the referendum has yet been made. Thus, the president's support does not mean the vote will take place: the question still has to go through parliamentary procedures.

Nausėda's statements about Russia

In the same context of publications about the President of Lithuania, Life.ru recalls that Nausėda earlier once again made sharp accusations against Russia: according to him, Moscow will allegedly continue hybrid attacks on NATO states and will merely create the appearance of readiness for a peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict. At the same time, the politician ruled out the possibility of serious negotiations before the spring of 2027. These statements are the assessment of the Lithuanian leader himself, not a confirmed fact.
