The key facts
- A source for RIA Novosti reported that among those wounded in the Krakow shooting is a Russian citizen; his condition has not been specified
- Earlier, the Russian embassy in Warsaw stated it had no reliable information about Russians among those killed and wounded
- The November 7 attack: six dead, including a police officer, 15 wounded; the suspect is a 24-year-old citizen of Poland
A Russian citizen among the wounded
One of those injured in the mass shooting in Krakow, Poland, is a citizen of Russia, a source familiar with the situation told RIA Novosti. The condition of the wounded person, the nature of the injuries and other circumstances have not yet been disclosed. Gazeta.Ru joined in reporting the same information, citing the same agency source.
What has changed compared with earlier reports
The report came against the backdrop of a contradictory picture: earlier, the Russian embassy in Warsaw said that it had no reliable information about Russian citizens among those killed and wounded, and the consular section was seeking to clarify the information with the Polish competent authorities. Thus, the data about the wounded Russian citizen so far comes from a single anonymous source, and there is no official confirmation from the diplomatic mission in the publications.
The course of the attack and the authorities' response
The attack took place on November 7: a man drove a car onto Krakow's Main Market Square and opened fire on passers-by, then continued shooting while driving another roughly one and a half kilometres. Six people were killed, including a police officer, and 15 more were wounded; 12 of the victims are in serious condition. According to Gazeta.Ru, the attacker tried to flee and crashed into another car; during his arrest, a police officer fired seven shots at him, and the attacker, who was wearing camouflage, underwent surgery and is in stable condition. According to the Polish prosecutor's office, the suspect is a 24-year-old citizen of Poland; media outlets claim he used a semi-automatic rifle from the AR-15/M4 family. Mourning has been declared in Krakow until November 11, and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński travelled to the city.
