Republican rout in the midterm elections
The US congressional midterm elections held on November 3 stripped the Republican Party of its majority in both chambers: Democrats gained control of the House of Representatives and the Senate. This significantly changes the balance of political power in Washington for the remainder of Donald Trump's presidential term.
Tucker Carlson's assessment
American journalist Tucker Carlson placed the blame for the rout directly on the head of the White House. “The Republicans' defeat was complete. And, of course, this defeat was Trump's defeat”, he said, emphasizing that voters rejected not individual candidates but the president himself. According to him, the election results draw a line under an entire period of American politics: “And we can say, without exaggeration and without gloating, that the Trump era is over. It's all over” (Life.ru).
Medvedev's forecast: pressure and sanctions
Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of Russia Dmitry Medvedev suggested that after the Republicans' defeat, pressure on Trump will intensify: Democrats may launch an impeachment procedure, and the president may agree to tighten sanctions against Russia in exchange for a political compromise. In his view, such measures could drive up oil prices and complicate relations with Moscow. At the same time, Medvedev does not expect immediate serious consequences for Russia and considers it useful to continue consultations with the current US administration on the Ukrainian settlement.
