Statement on casualties on both sides
On November 5, at a press conference at the White House, US President Donald Trump drew attention to the deaths of Russian civilians in the conflict with Ukraine. Answering a journalist's question about whether he had discussed with Vladimir Putin the deaths of Ukrainian civilians, Trump replied that he regularly raises this issue, but does not limit it to the actions of one side. «You know, Russia is also losing civilian population. This must stop», — his words are quoted by Gazeta.Ru. He called what is happening bloodshed that must be stopped and expressed hope for a swift diplomatic settlement: «I think we will put an end to this fairly soon, maybe very soon».
Meeting with Dmitriev and announcement of a deal
The same day Trump confirmed a meeting with the special representative of the Russian president, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund Kirill Dmitriev, who came to Washington at the invitation of Melania Trump for an event dedicated to the humanitarian mission in Alyoshky. At the document signing ceremony, the American leader announced a deal on Ukraine which, in his words, could affect all of Europe, but did not disclose details of the talks, promising that «everyone will be delighted». Life.ru notes that Trump did not meet that day with the Ukrainian representatives who had arrived in Washington.
Context: humanitarian mission in Alyoshky
The statements came against the backdrop of an unusual meeting at the White House: on November 5, US First Lady Melania Trump brought together representatives of Moscow and Kyiv to discuss the results of the humanitarian operation in Alyoshky, Kherson region. Russia was represented by Kirill Dmitriev and the human rights commissioner (in the Life.ru publication — the commissioner, feminine) Yana Lantratova. As Life.ru reported, through the mediation of Melania Trump, the parties agreed on a six-day ceasefire in Alyoshky from October 27 to November 1 — to deliver humanitarian cargo and evacuate residents. Tens of tons of food, medicine, water and fuel were sent to the city, 25 buses and nine ambulances were prepared; residents were given the choice of evacuation direction — to Russia or to Ukraine. Melania Trump thanked both sides and expressed hope that this experience would become the basis for broader agreements. The meeting took place ahead of the trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi scheduled for November 10–11.
