New €437 million package

Spain will provide Ukraine with a new military aid package worth 437 million euros. The amount was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following his meeting with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, held on November 5 in Madrid on the sidelines of the Ibero-American Summit. This was reported by Life.ru and Gazeta.Ru citing a statement by the Ukrainian leader.

What was discussed in Madrid

According to Zelensky, he and Sánchez discussed the content of the future package and the most urgent defense needs of the Ukrainian army, with particular attention paid to protection against air attacks. The Ukrainian president told the Spanish prime minister about the state of critical infrastructure: according to him, in 2026 Russian strikes damaged more Ukrainian locomotives than in all previous years of the conflict; he also spoke about attacks on energy facilities and water supply systems.

Madrid's confirmed commitments

Following the talks, the Spanish government confirmed its intention to continue supporting Kyiv, and Sánchez, according to Gazeta.Ru, also confirmed support for Ukraine's course toward EU membership. In addition, Madrid announced that during 2026 it had allocated a total of €570 million for Ukraine's recovery. According to the same outlet, Sánchez said he was following the agenda around a possible resumption of negotiations to settle the conflict, and at his suggestion Zelensky met on the sidelines of the summit with Latin American leaders to discuss the conflict's consequences for global security.

Context: air defense remained Kyiv's main request

The meeting continued Madrid's line of military support for Kyiv: in September, the head of the Spanish Foreign Ministry promised to continue transferring missiles for Patriot systems, and shortly before that NATO and the European Union sought additional deliveries of interceptors from Spanish and Greek stockpiles. In early November, Zelensky also demanded that the United States speed up the transfer of Patriot missiles, complaining about lengthy contract fulfillment timelines. The Ukrainian president's arrival in Madrid had been announced in advance as talks on strengthening defense cooperation, but without specific amounts — now they have been named. During the meeting, Zelensky also expressed condolences over the railway disaster in Toledo province on October 28, which claimed dozens of lives.
