Crash on the A2 motorway
On Friday, November 6, in the afternoon, a light aircraft crashed onto the A2 motorway northeast of Magdeburg in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, and was completely burned out. Both people on board were killed — their bodies were found by rescuers, a police spokesman told the Bild newspaper in a comment to the newspaper (based on reports by Anadolu and Deutsche Welle). According to preliminary data from the Magdeburg police, no other vehicles were involved in the crash and none were damaged.
Location and circumstances
The aircraft went down at about 14:48 local time (13:48 GMT) between the town of Burg and the Krähenberge rest area. Life.ru specifies, that the wreckage was burning about a kilometre from the Krähenberge car park, between the Burg-Centrum and Lostau interchanges, and the fire had to be extinguished right at the motorway. Photographs from the scene show the aircraft's tail on the carriageway and charred debris on the embankment; the plane was red and white. The cause of the crash has not yet been established.
What is known about the aircraft and the motorway closure
According to Flightradar data cited by Anadolu, it was a two-seat ultralight Aerostyle Breezer registered to an aviation club in the town of Kropp in the north of the country; the flight departed at 12:33 (11:33 GMT) from the club's airfield. The accident paralysed traffic: all lanes towards Hanover were closed on one of Germany's main east-west routes, which links the Berlin region with the country's most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia. Police and rescuers remained at the scene, and the duration of the closure remained unclear; drivers were advised to choose alternative routes.
