Anniversary edition marking 50 years of Animals
To mark the 50th anniversary of the album Animals, Pink Floyd has prepared a large-scale anniversary reissue titled Animals 50. The release is scheduled for January 22, 2027, and will be issued by Sony Music, Variety reports citing a Life.ru publication. The expanded version of the collection will include five CDs, three vinyl records, and a Blu-ray with additional materials, including mixes in 5.1 and Dolby Atmos formats; the set will comprise nine discs in total. In addition, a digital version will be available, along with more affordable options — a two-disc CD edition and a two-record vinyl edition, combining the original album with a selection of rare recordings.
Rarities and a 1977 live recording
A special place in the collection belongs to a disc of rarities: it will feature, for the first time, the composition Young Nicholas Jon, written by Roger Waters. The other four recordings were already known: Studio Jam, early demo versions of Dogs and Sheep, and the original radio version of Sheep, about four and a half minutes long, which had never been released commercially — it has already been presented on digital platforms as a teaser for the release.
The Oakland concert
The second significant part of the edition will be the live recording Live From the Oakland Coliseum — a performance on May 9, 1977, in Oakland. The program includes 13 compositions: Animals and Wish You Were Here performed in full, two songs from The Dark Side of the Moon, and the final live version of the instrumental piece Careful With That Axe, Eugene. The recording was made not by a professional sound engineer but by a 19-year-old fan of the band, Reinhard Holwein; despite its origins, the material was mixed to a quality close to official live releases. The value of the find is underscored by the fact that in the mid and late 1970s Pink Floyd hardly ever recorded its performances for official release.
Contents of the collection and comments from band members
The set will also include the original version of Animals and the remix prepared in 2018 but released only in 2022 — at the time, publication was delayed due to disagreements within the band, including over the design of the accompanying materials. An addition will be a 64-page hardcover book with texts by writer Jonathan Lethem and previously unpublished photographs from the cover shoot at the Battersea Power Station in London. Fans should not expect a combined version of Pigs on the Wing: it was available on the 8-track version of the 1977 album and was already reissued in June 2026 in the 8-Tracks compilation, so it will not be included in Animals 50.
Context: the catalog sale and Gilmour's words
After the sale of the music catalog to Sony Music, which took place in 2024 and was reportedly valued at approximately 400 million dollars, the members of Pink Floyd are not personally involved in preparing archival reissues — nevertheless, the company attached statements from Roger Waters and David Gilmour to the announcement. Gilmour suggested that the sound of the record was influenced by the rapid spread of punk music, which was changing the industry in 1977. “It’s quite an aggressive, minimalist album,” the musician described Animals, noting that compared with the large-scale canvases of Wish You Were Here, the new work turned out sharper and more direct, and Waters’s lyrics considerably more aggressive.
