The key facts

  • The ON CLINIC patient claims the mole was removed without dermatoscopy and without histology, and the tissue was discarded.
  • After the operation, she says, a wound about two centimeters deep remained, along with fever and pain; she was then treated at a state polyclinic.
  • A surgical oncologist stresses the necessity of histology for removed tissue; the woman is preparing a lawsuit.

The essence of the conflict

A Moscow resident is preparing a lawsuit against the private ON CLINIC clinic after an operation on October 11, when she came in with an inflamed atheroma — a subcutaneous growth. According to her, she paid 3,600 rubles for the consultation, but within a minute the doctor proposed surgery costing almost 30,000 rubles. Citing the patient, this is reported by SHOT PROVERKA, the story is also described by Life.ru.

The patient's claims

The key accusation concerns a mole: the woman claims that the surgeon also cut out a large mole without first examining it with a dermatoscope, and threw the removed tissue into a trash bin instead of sending it for histology. After the procedure, according to her account, an open wound about two centimeters deep remained, her temperature rose at night, and she experienced severe pain. For each subsequent dressing change at the clinic, the patient says, she was charged from 3,600 to 4,600 rubles, so she turned to a state polyclinic, where antibiotics and daily wound care were prescribed.

The clinic's position and next steps

When the woman tried to find out what had happened to the removed tissue, a clinic representative, according to her, replied that the surgeon had not seen any mole and that there was no mention of it in the medical records. Surgical oncologist Sergey Shcherbakov in a conversation with SHOT PROVERKA noted that without a histological examination of the removed tissue, the nature of the growth cannot be reliably determined. The patient is demanding a refund for the operation and intends to go to court. These claims are, for now, her words and the opinion of the invited specialist: the clinic's own position in the publications is represented only by a retelling of its employee's response, and no legal proceedings have begun yet.

Why histology matters

The essence of the complaint goes beyond a dispute over money: without examining the removed tissue, it is impossible to know whether the mole was benign. A telling example comes from another Life.ru publication about three-time Olympic champion Iivo Niskanen: the Finnish skier was found to have early-stage melanoma after an examination of a removed mole; two operations were required, after which he was able to return to training. This case illustrates exactly what is lost when tissue is not sent for analysis — however, it is not directly connected to the Moscow woman's lawsuit.
