Quiz on knowledge of obsolete words

The publication Life.ru has published a quiz devoted to obsolete words from Russian classic prose. As the authors explain, it is a familiar situation: a reader comes across an unfamiliar word in a story and skips over it — the plot seems clear enough, but the imagination fills the scene with quite different things. The quiz includes eight words from the works of Mamin-Sibiryak, Turgenev and Chekhov. According to the publication, some of them still appear in everyday speech, while others make you reach for a dictionary. The participant's task is to work out the meanings without footnotes and find out how accurately they pictured the scenes from familiar books.

Other quizzes by the publication

You can also complete the check in other Life.ru quizzes: the publication offers to solve the riddles of Samuil Marshak, recognize Soviet films by their apartments, answer ten school questions against the clock, name six USSR films by characters in masks, identify Russian regions by their outlines or determine the peoples of Russia by details of traditional costume — for example, tell a kalfak apart from a kokoshnik.
