Six detained in espionage case and smuggling of military components
Polish intelligence services have detained six people suspected of working for Russian intelligence and illegally supplying military components to Russia. The news was reported by the Anadolu agency citing a statement by Poland's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration (ABW) on Thursday, November 5.
Charges and pre-trial measures
According to the Coordinator of Poland's Special Services, Tomasz Siemoniak, those detained include five Polish citizens aged 25 to 52 and a 37-year-old Russian citizen. All six have been charged with participation in an organized criminal group, and four, including the Russian woman, are additionally accused of espionage. The court ordered four of them held in custody for three months; the remaining two were subjected to pre-trial measures not involving detention.
What the investigation alleges
The investigation believes the group acted on behalf of Russian intelligence and illegally exported significant volumes of components used in the production of ammunition and weapons systems, which could have strengthened Russia's military potential. The charges also include violations of Polish rules on international trade in goods and technologies that are strategically important for national defense and international security. As part of the operation, conducted from October 21 to November 2, ABW officers searched 21 premises in the Warmian-Masurian, Pomeranian, and Greater Poland voivodeships in the north and west of the country. The investigation is being supervised by the National Prosecutor's Office in Białystok.
