Session at Gorky Film Studio

The plenary session “The Role of Cinema in Shaping a Shared Cultural Space” was held at Gorky Film Studio as part of the Film Forum of the International Week “Peoples of Russia.” It was attended by Moscow Government Minister and head of the city’s Department of Culture Alexey Fursin; his remarks are cited by Gazeta.Ru with reference to the department’s press service.

What Fursin said

According to Fursin, cinema helps preserve historical memory, introduces audiences to the cultures of different peoples, and helps countries find common ground. “Films on which entire generations grew up become part of a shared cultural memory. In Soviet times, films by Gorky Film Studio were watched in Minsk and Tashkent, Yerevan and Bishkek, Baku and Almaty. Today it is important to preserve this connection and create new stories that will interest audiences in Russia, the CIS countries and beyond,” the publication quotes him as saying. Following the session, he added that Moscow is ready to provide venues for cultural dialogue and to support initiatives that strengthen cultural ties.

Program and plans

The Film Forum runs from November 2 to 8. The program includes 47 films and individual TV series episodes, shown at 16 venues of the Moskino network: Russian feature and documentary films, regional cinema, animation, and films from CIS countries and co-productions. As part of the forum, professional meetings and the signing of memorandums of cooperation with organizations from CIS countries are planned — they are aimed at joint projects, content exchange, and expanding international cooperation in cinematography. Thus, for now only plans for the memorandums have been announced, not agreements already concluded; the specific signing organizations are not named in the publication.
