The key facts

  • Gates predicts that in about 20 years robots and AI will replace most human labor
  • The changes will first affect office and intellectual work, then physical labor
  • Among the risks cited are difficulties for workers whose skills become less in demand

Gates' forecast on the future of work

Bill Gates shared his vision of the future of human work on The Verge's Decoder podcast, as reported by Kun.uz. According to him, many tasks performed by people today could in the future be taken over by artificial intelligence and robots. He expects such changes in roughly 20 years, but his forecast depends on an important condition: AI development must not slow down.

Cheaper and more efficient than humans

In Gates' assessment, robot labor will be cheaper and more efficient than human labor. As a result, the need for people to produce most goods and provide services may disappear. Gates suggests this could lead to lower prices for goods, improved quality of medical care, and reduced shortages, but the process will not be easy for everyone: workers whose professional skills become less in demand may face serious difficulties.

First mental work, then physical

The changes are expected to appear first in office work and a number of professions based on intellectual labor. Gates believes AI's impact in these areas could become noticeable in the near future: for example, artificial intelligence can handle telephone sales, customer service, and accounting — cheaper, faster, and more accurately. In his view, once AI surpasses humans in mental abilities, the shortage of specialists in office and intellectual fields will disappear.

Robots and physical labor

Humanoid robots, in Gates' opinion, could similarly affect the market for physical labor, including construction and agriculture: handing over tasks such as building houses or growing food to robots could change employment in these industries. The conversation also noted growing investment in robotics, especially in China; Gates sees this as a sign that creating machines that perform physical work at low cost is realistic.

Opportunities of automation

Alongside the risks, Gates also emphasized the positive sides of automation: robots could build cheaper housing, and AI could help develop treatments for diseases. In his assessment, such technologies could raise living standards and make basic services more accessible to more people.
