The key facts
- Iran's Supreme National Security Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei declared Trump militarily and politically defeated
- JD Vance linked the Republicans' midterm election loss to the war with Iran
- The Democrats gained control of both chambers of Congress
Tehran's statement in the wake of the election results
Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Mohsen Rezaei said that Tehran has defeated US President Donald Trump on two levels at once. 'The Iranian people inflicted a strategic defeat on Trump on the battlefield and in the Strait of Hormuz — and a political defeat in Washington,' he wrote on the X platform. According to him, Americans are bearing the financial burden of the war, and he also issued a warning: 'Anyone who stands against Iran will pay the price — from the battlefield to their own doorstep.' Anadolu reports this.
Connection to the midterm elections
Rezaei's statement came after US Vice President JD Vance blamed the war with Iran for the Republicans' defeat in the midterm elections held on Tuesday. 'The reason we lost is the war,' Vance wrote on X on Wednesday, noting that voters' discontent with the conflict prompted former Trump supporters to back the Democrats. According to the outlet, as a result of the elections the Democrats gained control of both chambers of Congress.
Context of the conflict
According to Anadolu's publication, the US and Israel began the war against Iran on February 28; a ceasefire was reached in April, but in July, amid stalled diplomatic efforts, hostilities resumed. Rezaei's assessment of Trump's 'defeats' is a statement by the Iranian side, not a confirmed fact; at the same time, it coincided in timing with the US Vice President's own admission that the war had become a factor in the Republicans' electoral loss.
