The Koalicja exercises and Philippot's reaction
Florian Philippot, leader of the French party Les Patriotes, said that the countries of the 'coalition of the willing' are seeking a military conflict. He was reacting to European states' plans to hold large-scale exercises in Poland. 'This, plus 2,800 French and British soldiers who will land in Poland on Monday — they want war,' Philippot wrote on the social network X, as quoted by Life.ru.
What is known about the exercises
The exercises in question are the Koalicja maneuvers, to be held from November 9 to 22 under the leadership of France and the United Kingdom. They involve troops from 11 countries, including Germany, Poland, Turkey and the Baltic states; about 2,800 personnel are involved in total. France provides the largest contingent — 1,100 servicemen — while the United Kingdom is sending 300 troops. The participants intend to practice troop redeployment, unit logistics and coordination between national contingents.
The purpose of the exercises and the dispute over their nature
According to the British Ministry of Defence, the exercises are aimed at preparing for a possible mission to ensure Ukraine's security after the cessation of hostilities; the deployment of these forces to Ukrainian territory has not yet been agreed. The organizers claim that the future mission will not be offensive in nature. Philippot, meanwhile, has repeatedly spoken out against the deployment of French troops in Ukraine, warning of the risk of a direct clash between European countries and Russia.
The scale has grown compared with the original plans
It is telling how the stated scale of the maneuvers has changed: Life.ru previously reported, citing the British press, on the participation of about 1,500 servicemen from several European countries, but the organizers later announced an expansion to 2,800 participants — meaning the numbers nearly doubled. In addition, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz invited Volodymyr Zelensky to a meeting of the 'coalition of the willing' in Berlin on November 19. No final decision has yet been made on the fate of the possible mission in Ukraine.
