The key facts
- Electronic displays at new metro stations will show exact train arrival and departure times
- Currently, displays show the time since the previous train departed, not a countdown to arrival
- By 2030, passenger traffic is planned to reach 1.8 million people per day, with the number of stations rising to 79
Displays with exact times — only at new stations
Intelligent electronic displays showing the exact arrival and departure times of trains are planned to be installed on the new lines and stations of the Tashkent Metro. This was announced on November 3 at a press conference by the Deputy Chairman of the Board of JSC Toshkent metropoliteni Yuldoshyusupov, as reported by Daryo.uz.
Why existing stations will not be upgraded for now
According to Yusupov, the current displays at stations do not show the time until the next train arrives, but rather the time elapsed since the previous train departed. Installing modern timers and electronic clocks at existing stations is difficult due to limited technical capabilities. The introduction of new displays is provided for by presidential decree No. 191 of May 15, 2026, and it applies specifically to new lines and stations — gradually. No specific timeline for upgrading the displays at already operating stations has been given.
Context: growth of the network and passenger traffic
The same press conference presented data on the metro's development. Over the past seven years, 33 km of lines have been built and 21 stations opened; the network has a total of 50 stations spanning 71 km. Average passenger traffic grew from 280–300 thousand people per day in 2021 to more than 1.2 million in 2026. Peak-hour intervals have been reduced to 1.5–2 minutes on the Chilonzor line, 3 minutes on the Ozbekiston line, 4 minutes on the Yunusobod line, and 8 minutes on the elevated ring line. In 2027, 14 five-car trains are planned to be purchased, and by 2030 the targets are to increase passenger traffic to 1.8 million people per day, the number of stations to 79, and the length of lines to 103 km.
