The attack at the party and the first hours of the investigation
On the evening of Saturday, 31 October, Hampshire Police received a call to Park Road in Chandler's Ford, near Eastleigh — according to BBC News, shortly after 22:30 GMT. The outlet reported that at a Halloween party five teenagers — three aged 16 and two aged 17 — had suffered serious stab wounds and were taken to hospital. Police said that, in their view, an 'unknown group' had gained entry to the house, after which the attack began. The cordon remained in place on Sunday as well, and senior investigating officer Elizabeth Pirie appealed to witnesses to come forward.
Witnesses, schools and the authorities' response
In a report on 2 November, BBC News cited details from two witnesses: according to their accounts, the fight began after a group of people climbed over the garden fence; the motive behind the attack remained unclear to them. One teenager described seeing an acquaintance lift up his T-shirt saying 'I've been stabbed', and later lying in front of the house with someone pressing on the wound. Barton Peveril Sixth Form College in Eastleigh said two of the victims were its current students, while Caroline Lowing, head teacher of Thornden School in Chandler's Ford, said some of those injured were her former pupils. Eastleigh MP Liz Jarvis urged residents to 'stay calm and not spread misinformation', and a Home Office spokesperson stressed that the government is working towards the goal of halving knife crime. Chandler's Ford's vicar, Duncan Hollands, called what happened shocking for a 'very quiet place' and said the churches are open to offer support: St Boniface on Hursley Road — daily from 09:00 to 17:00 throughout the week, and St Martin in the Wood on Queen's Road — on Monday and Wednesday from 15:00 to 17:00.
Three arrests in three days
The investigation moved quickly: on Monday, 2 November, police announced the detention of two teenagers — a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old, both from Southampton — on suspicion of attempted murder; they remained in custody. At the same time, the condition of the victims became known: two remained in hospital with serious injuries, one 17-year-old was in a life-threatening condition, and the rest had been discharged. On Tuesday, 3 November, a third suspect was arrested — a 16-year-old from Bristol, also on suspicion of attempted murder; by that point only one 17-year-old victim remained in hospital. Elizabeth Pirie called the arrests 'significant progress', but stressed that police are still awaiting any information, as well as footage from CCTV, phones, dashcams and doorbell cameras from Park Road and the surrounding area. Throughout the week, local neighbourhood officers are visiting schools and colleges to support those affected by the incident, and Eastleigh district commander Rachel Noble assured residents that officers will continue to remain in the Park Road area.
