Readiness to invite Zelensky
US President Donald Trump, speaking to journalists at his residence on Saturday, Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, said he is ready to invite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the G20 summit, which the United States will host in December. Asked whether he would send such an invitation, Trump replied: “I would. I would. No problem” (according to Anadolu).
Context: the invitation to Putin and Ukraine's status
The G20 leaders' summit is to take place on December 14–15 at the Trump National Doral resort complex in Miami. Back in September, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed that Washington had invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the summit, despite Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine. Ukraine is not a member of the G20, but its representatives have previously taken part in the group's meetings as invited guests.
What remains undecided
No official invitation to Zelensky has been announced yet. On Saturday, Rubio noted that the decision rests with Trump and suggested that an invitation could be considered if it would help advance diplomatic efforts. Earlier the same day, Trump told journalists that he had spoken with Zelensky and expressed optimism about the prospects of ending the war. Thus, at this point only the invitation to Putin and Trump's personal statement of readiness to invite the Ukrainian leader have been confirmed — no formal decision on Zelensky has yet been made.
