The key facts
- Iran designated the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force as 'terrorist organizations' and MI6 as a 'hostile group'
- The measure was announced in response to London's designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organization on July 13 under the State Threats Act 2026
- Tehran also accused London of participating in the US and Israeli war against Iran
Tehran's symmetric response
On Sunday, Iran added the British Royal Navy and Royal Air Force to its list of 'terrorist organizations' and designated the foreign intelligence service MI6 as a 'hostile group.' Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this in a statement distributed by the state-run IRNA agency (according to Anadolu).
Grounds for the decision
The ministry explained the move by London's 'malicious' actions, above all the designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. That British decision was taken on July 13 under the State Threats Act 2026. Iran's decision was made on the basis of a resolution of the country's Supreme National Security Council.
Accusations and context
Tehran also accused London of participating in the US and Israeli war against Iran — by granting access to military and logistical bases and facilities under British jurisdiction. According to the agency, tensions in the Middle East have persisted since February 28, when the US and Israel struck Iran, prompting retaliatory actions by Tehran in the region. Despite subsequent diplomatic efforts and a memorandum signed by Washington and Tehran in June, disagreements remain over security issues and the passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.
