The key facts

First title in their second season

The Golden State Valkyries defeated the Atlanta Dream 68-63 in Game 7 of the finals and won the first WNBA championship in franchise history — in only the club's second season in the league, which the team joined in 2025. Anadolu reports this. The best-of-seven series ended 4-3 in favor of the California club, while Atlanta was left without a first title.

How the game unfolded

The decisive game took place at the Chase Center arena in San Francisco. The leader of the winners was French-American basketball player Gabby Williams, who scored 30 points, 28 of them in the second half. Her three-pointer with about two minutes remaining put the Valkyries ahead, and the team never gave up the lead. At that point Atlanta had led 30-24 at halftime, but in the third quarter Golden State won the period 21-14 and moved in front heading into the final quarter. Kaya Stokes added 13 rebounds, and Veronica Burton sealed the final score with two made free throws in the closing moments.

A historic playoff format

This finals was the first in WNBA history in which the series went to a seventh game: the finals playoff format was expanded to a best-of-seven in 2025. Thus, the very first finals under the new scheme turned out to be as dramatic as possible and ended with a victory for a club that, at the start of that season, did not yet exist.
