Victory on day four

West Indies beat Bangladesh by eight wickets in the first Test and took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series, AFP reports. Brandon King carried the chase of a 170-run target to the finish with an unbeaten 81 off 115 balls, including 10 fours and one six; the visitors got there in 35.1 overs on day four in Mirpur after Bangladesh were bowled out for 142 in their second innings.

How the match unfolded

Bangladesh resumed day four at 79-6 with a lead of 106 runs, but after the early loss of Jaker Ali (22) hopes of setting a serious target faded. Nayeem Hasan survived two dropped catches and brought up his maiden Test fifty (52 off 91 balls), yet West Indies captain Roston Chase, who took 5-36 — his fifth five-wicket haul in Tests — wrapped up the innings at 142. Jomel Warrican, named player of the match, added 4-63 to his five wickets in the first innings. In reply, King and John Campbell attacked their way to 64-0 before rain; after two interruptions King was dropped on 70 but saw the chase through, while Campbell fell for 49. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto admitted the team failed to execute its plans 'in all three departments, especially in the field.' The second Test will be played in Sylhet from November 5.
