New standard of care for calluses
Russia's Ministry of Health has drafted an order approving a standard of medical care for adults with calluses, Gazeta.Ru reports, citing TASS.
What the draft provides for
Under the draft, diagnosis of the condition is planned to include a microbiological test of skin elements for sensitivity to antibacterial and antifungal drugs, as well as a visit to a dermatovenerologist. Electrocoagulation and laser destruction of skin tissue are proposed as treatments; products with the active ingredient 'urea' may also be used. The Ministry of Health estimates the average duration of treatment at 39 days.
Context
In the same publication, the outlet cites a comment from epidemiologist and podologist Vera Berezovenko: according to her, most people treat calluses as a minor nuisance — a burst blister is covered with a plaster or left untreated — yet an ordinary soft callus, due to the microclimate inside footwear, can lead to hospitalization. The publication does not say when the order will be approved or when the standard will take effect.
