Victory and a Ticket to Turin
Daniil Medvedev reached the semifinals of the ATP 500 tournament in Vienna, defeating France's Adrian Mannarino 6-2, 6-3, AFP reports. The world No. 5 closed out the match on his second match point against his opponent's serve, with the opponent ranked 73rd in the world. Along with the semifinal berth, Medvedev secured his place at the ATP Finals, which will be held in Turin from November 15 to 22. He will join Alexander Zverev, who will top the ATP rankings on Monday, Carlos Alcaraz, and Ben Shelton. Since 2019, Medvedev has missed the season-ending tournament only once.
Form After the US Open
After exiting the US Open in early September in the fourth round against Frances Tiafoe, Medvedev won the tournaments in Hangzhou and Almaty, reached the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters and the ATP 500 event in Beijing. Thus, the semifinal run in Vienna continues a streak of consistent results that secured his early qualification for Turin.
Semifinal Opponent
In the semifinal, Medvedev will face 23-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, a seven-time Grand Slam champion. In the quarterfinal, he beat American Tommy Paul 6-4, 7-6 (7/2) and said after the match: 'I think I played great tennis.' The win extended his season record at 500-level tournaments to 14 wins with zero losses.
The Other Half of the Draw
In the top half of the draw, Zverev, who had secured the world No. 1 ranking the day before, crushed Britain's Arthur Fery 6-0, 6-2. The repeat of this year's Wimbledon semifinal took just 58 minutes. In the next round, Zverev will face the winner of the Alex de Minaur — Matteo Berrettini match.
