The incident and the amount of damage

A resident of Sakhalin who bought a large TV must pay a shopping mall more than 76 thousand rubles for the damaged escalator. The man was carrying the box with the appliance on the escalator between floors, which is intended for visitors only — the packaging got jammed in the mechanism, after which the escalator made an emergency stop. According to the court, three steps broke as a result, and the damage was estimated at 76,195 rubles. The buyer refused to voluntarily compensate the shopping mall's expenses, the press service of the Sakhalin Regional Court reported.

How the ruling changed

Notably, the ruling in the case changed: the court of first instance rejected the shopping mall management's lawsuit, but the regional court reviewed it and sided with the plaintiff. In the end, the buyer was ordered to fully compensate the damage. For shopping mall visitors, this means that carrying large purchases on passenger escalators can result in real financial liability if the appliance damages the equipment.

The customer is always right: It was the buyer himself who came up with the idea of taking the pricey TV down from DNS on the escalator
