What is known about the complex

Savannah River is a large nuclear complex opened in the early 1950s, where during the years of US Cold War rule materials for nuclear weapons were produced, including tritium and plutonium-239. The national laboratory is located in the northwestern part of the complex. According to the US Department of Energy, the facility's specialists are now engaged in environmental protection, cleanup of contaminated areas, nuclear waste management and disposal of radioactive materials. No information about casualties, the cause of the fire or the nature of the release is available in published reports.
