Bayern, without Kane, thrash Magdeburg

On Tuesday, October 28, Bayern confidently advanced to the round of 16 of the German Cup, thrashing second-division side Magdeburg 6:1 at home. According to AFP, star striker Harry Kane, who had received the Ballon d'Or in London two days earlier, remained on the bench for the entire match — with Saturday's home Bundesliga game against Borussia Dortmund in mind.

The match and the atmosphere at the arena

Before kick-off, Kane's teammates formed a guard of honour for him, and 75,000 spectators at the Allianz Arena greeted the Ballon d'Or winner. Without their top scorer, the team had no trouble: Michael Olise scored a brace, while Ismael Saibari, Alphonso Davies, Nathaniel Brown and 17-year-old (described by AFP as a teenager) David Santos Daiber also got on the scoresheet. Olise opened the scoring in the 10th minute from a Saibari assist; five minutes later Mateusz Zukowski equalised, but before the break Olise set up Saibari, and after the interval he converted a penalty himself — designated penalty-taker Kane stayed on the bench. Teenager Lennart Karl provided two assists for Davies and Brown, and Santos Daiber sealed the result with a goal in stoppage time.

Kompany back after hospitalisation

For Bayern, this was not the only good news on matchday: head coach Vincent Kompany was discharged from hospital five days after losing consciousness at training on Friday. AFP does not report details of his condition, but notes that the coach was present before the game.

Other matches of the round

Bayer Leverkusen came back from two goals down to beat Nuremberg 5:2: defender Edmond Tapsoba scored a brace, with Patrik Schick, Jonas Hofmann and Lucas Vazquez also on target. Stuttgart, finalists of the 2025 tournament, snatched a 1:0 win over Paderborn thanks to a 90th-minute goal by Deniz Undav — the visitors had been playing with an extra man since the 37th minute after Laurin Curda's red card, but for a long time could not break down the opposition defence.
