Kompany discharged from hospital

Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital and will continue his recovery at home. The club's sporting director Max Eberl announced this on Wednesday, minutes before the team's DFB-Pokal round-of-32 match against Magdeburg, speaking on air on ARD. According to him, doctors have established the cause of what happened: the 40-year-old Belgian has been diagnosed with irritation of the meninges.

What happened

Kompany was rushed to hospital after losing consciousness on the training pitch in Munich on Friday; at the time, the club only spoke of a virus. On Saturday, Bayern said the coach's return to the bench would take 'weeks, not days', and that during this period the team would be led by his English assistant Aaron Danks. After the win over Freiburg (3:1), Danks said the coaching staff would not discuss football matters with Kompany during his recovery.

Condition and immediate plans

'He has now been allowed to go home, where he can continue his rehabilitation. For him, rehabilitation means rest and medication. I am very, very confident that he will soon be back on the touchline at one hundred percent,' AFP quotes Eberl as saying, calling the news 'the best and most wonderful news for all of us'. According to the agency, as far back as mid-October Kompany looked unwell and was limping during the home win over Leipzig (6:1), and four days later, two days before collapsing at training, he still took charge of the match against Arsenal (2:2).
