Talks on a treaty begin

The United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Finland and Poland have announced the start of negotiations on a treaty under the Multilateral Defense Mechanism (MDM), a joint defense procurement framework, Anadolu reports, citing a joint statement by the countries. The initiative is aimed at accelerating investment in defense and joint procurement, and the partners said they expect to launch the MDM in 2027, while observing the national procedures of each participant.

What the mechanism is meant to deliver

According to the UK government's description, the MDM is a new way of financing defense spending that gives participants greater purchasing power and allows capabilities to be built up under budget constraints. In the joint statement, the countries indicated that the mechanism should reduce costs, give industry greater predictability, ensure better value for money and improve interoperable NATO capabilities. Among the motives cited was the 'rapidly changing international security situation and the consequences of Russia's aggression against Ukraine'; the participants also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine. The statement was published ahead of the NATO summit in Ankara, scheduled for July.
