TikTok enters the restaurant guide market
TikTok has launched a new feature called “Must Eat” — a restaurant guide built on the platform’s own content. According to TechCrunch, the feature uses more than 40 million posts and comments to compile restaurant recommendations and curated lists in one place. Users can browse restaurants by city and filter results by cuisine, price, rating, and location.
How it works and how it differs from competitors
Recommendations are divided into two categories: “Everyday Eats” — casual spots and neighborhood favorites — and “Elevated Dining” — restaurants for celebrations, special occasions, or a night out. Individual restaurants can be booked directly through TikTok via OpenTable. The feature can be found through the search bar, the Local feed, restaurant pages, and location links in videos. TechCrunch notes that the move puts TikTok in more direct competition with Yelp and Google Maps, but with a different approach: instead of relying on search results, maps, and traditional reviews, the platform builds its guide on what it already does well — connecting people with restaurants through recommendations from other users. Viral videos have long helped venues attract customers; now the platform is structuring that content into a standalone product.
Where and when it launches
The rollout begins in three US cities — New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. No timeline for expansion to other cities or countries was given in the announcement; the event currently has no connection to Uzbekistan.
