Development complete, production in 2027
South Korea has completed the development of a domestically produced helicopter designed for maritime strike operations, with serial production expected from the period following the reporting one, the Yonhap agency reported, citing the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), Anadolu writes. The project is estimated to cost 450 billion won (about $337 million).
What is known about the aircraft and its tests
According to DAPA, the helicopter is based on the maritime modification of the KUH-1 Surion and is intended for multidimensional amphibious operations. It is equipped with air-to-surface missiles and other weapon systems, as well as additional equipment for countering enemy helicopters and drones.
Tests and certification
The project began in 2022 and went through a series of evaluations, including live-fire tests of a turret-mounted machine gun, air-to-surface missiles, as well as guided and unguided rockets. In July, the aircraft passed a full combat suitability assessment, and in August it received an airworthiness certificate confirming compliance with safe flight standards. DAPA plans to begin production of about 20 helicopters in 2027.
