The investigation is complete

Investigators have completed their work on the criminal case of Ibrahim Suleymanov — who has been called “Russia’s most secretive billionaire.” The parties to the case have already been notified that the preliminary investigation is over, and starting next week the defendants will begin reviewing the assembled case materials, RIA Novosti reports, citing a source.

The charges brought and related cases

Suleymanov is charged with organizing two murders and an attempted murder. According to investigators, he also has prior convictions for fraud and money laundering. A Moscow court ordered his arrest a year ago. Earlier, a court sent to pre-trial detention two men accused of aiding Suleymanov in the attempted-murder case.

Verdict in the related case

A separate episode was the attempted-murder case: a military court sentenced a 54-year-old entrepreneur from Kursk to 25 years in prison on charges of attempting an act of terrorism and preparing an assault on the life of a public official. The convict must spend the first seven years in prison and the remaining 18 years in a strict-regime penal colony; in addition, two fines were imposed — 1.6 million and 60 thousand rubles.

What comes next

The defendants’ review of the case materials is a standard stage following the end of the preliminary investigation, after which the case is sent to court for consideration on its merits. The publications do not yet report the date the case will be forwarded to court or any specific trial prospects.
