The actor has died at the age of 90

Walter Koenig, who played Ensign Pavel Andreievich Chekov in the original Star Trek television series, has died at the age of 90. His agent announced the death; representatives of the actor said in a statement provided to the BBCthat he passed away on Sunday at his home in North Hollywood, 'surrounded by his daughter and his niece'. euronews, in its version of the statement, cites the cause as 'old age'. 'Today we mourn Walter Koenig, whose talent, warmth and unforgettable roles left an indelible mark on the hearts of generations of fans around the world,' the statement said.

A role conceived during the Cold War

Koenig joined the show's main cast in its second season in 1967 and played the young, energetic navigator of the Enterprise until the series ended in 1969, later returning to the role in six feature films with the original cast, released between 1979 and 1991. For his work in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986), he was nominated for the Saturn Award from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. According to the BBC, the character was introduced to attract a younger audience, and the studio of the show's creator, Gene Roddenberry, publicly framed the role as a response to criticism in the newspaper Pravda about the absence of a Russian character — a claim Koenig himself later denied. The series aired at the height of the Cold War and the space race, depicting a future in which nations cooperate, and Chekov's Russian background fit that ideal. According to the actor himself, as cited by The Hollywood Reporter, Chekov's job was to 'set up the framework of the plot that McCoy, Spock and Kirk would fill in'.

A career beyond the Enterprise

Koenig was born on 14 September 1936 in Chicago and grew up in Manhattan in a family of Soviet Jewish immigrants whose family had lived in Lithuania. He studied at New York's Neighborhood Playhouse alongside James Caan, Christopher Lloyd and Dabney Coleman, and in the early 1960s began landing television roles — in the series Mr. Novak, Ben Casey, The Untouchables, I Spy and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. After Star Trek, he wrote scripts for the series Family and The Incredible Hulk, taught part-time at the University of California, Los Angeles, worked in video games, including the 1995 CD-ROM game Maximum Surge, and returned to science fiction in the 1990s, playing the telepath Alfred Bester in the series Babylon 5. He also wrote an episode of the animated Star Trek spin-off and voiced President Anton Chekov in Star Trek: Picard in 2023. In early 2026, he received the Platinum Award for Best Actor at the Independent Shorts Awards for the short film Mr. Fleischmann.

Tributes and remembrance

After Koenig's death, only William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk, and George Takei — Hikaru Sulu — remain from the original series' main cast. 'Walter was so much more than just Chekov: he was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man and a loyal friend,' Takei wrote on X, adding: 'Rest in peace, my dear friend. Keep steering the ship on an even course.' Koenig was the best man at Takei's wedding to Brad Altman in 2008. From 1965 until her death in 2022, the actor was married to actress Judy Levitt, who appeared with him in three Star Trek films and in Babylon 5. Their son Andrew, known for his role as Richard 'Boner' Stabone in the sitcom Growing Pains, died by suicide in 2010 at the age of 41. Koenig is survived by his daughter, actress and screenwriter Danielle Koenig.
