Initiatives for the film sector at a meeting with the president
On October 26, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, at a meeting with filmmakers, put forward initiatives aimed at social support for industry workers, the formation of new creative structures, and strengthening the national film brand. According to the head of state, the Kohinur sanatorium in the Nizhnechirchik district, recently renovated to modern standards, will be fully transferred to the disposal of filmmakers. In addition, at least 300 film sector employees will be given free vouchers every year for rest and treatment at sanatoriums across the republic.
New associations and a unified Uzbekfilm brand
To consolidate the professional community, the Union of Filmmakers of Uzbekistan and the Union of Film Industry Representatives of Uzbekistan will be merged into a Chamber of Representatives of the Film Sector of Uzbekistan. To strengthen science, analysis, and professional criticism, a Film Scholars' Club is being created, which will be provided with membership in the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI). It has also been proposed to establish the name Uzbekfilm as a unified brand of national cinema: to assign it to part of the present-day Chilanzar street, where the studio is located, as well as to rename the Museum of Cinema Art into the Uzbekfilm museum, the Palace of Cinema Art into the Uzbekfilm cinema palace, and the National Film Fund into the Uzbekfilm national film fund.
Why this matters
The decisions directly affect film industry workers: the Kohinur sanatorium and annual vouchers for 300 people provide concrete social guarantees, while the creation of the chamber and the film scholars' club changes the structure of the professional community. The renaming of part of Chilanzar street in Tashkent and the unification of museum and archival institutions under the Uzbekfilm brand mean practical changes to city addresses and the names of specialized organizations. No information about the timeline for implementation or the legal formalization of the initiatives has yet been reported in the publications.
