The key facts

  • The Commission of the Public Council under the Ministry of Transport proposed a unified sign for lost children at transport hubs
  • Approaches currently differ: the Moscow metro has 'Metrosha', some places post instructions, and some have no signage at all
  • In the future, the sign could be extended to shopping malls, stadiums, concert venues and tourist attractions

A single symbol instead of various signs

The Commission of the Public Council under the Russian Ministry of Transport has proposed creating a unified system of signage for children who have lost their parents at a railway station or airport. The idea is that a child should not have to figure out unfamiliar signs but instead look for one and the same symbol. The initiative was described to RIA Novosti by a member of the commission for the development of passenger transportation, Kira Doroseva.

Why this is needed

According to the outlet, the ways to get help currently differ: the Moscow metro has the character 'Metrosha',other facilities post instructions, and in some places there is neither a recognizable sign nor a clear hint. Because of this, children have to find out anew each time where to turn. A single sign should work as a familiar landmark known in advance: parents will be able to explain to their child beforehand that if they lose sight of the adults, they should look for this sign and then approach a uniformed staff member or go to a help point.

Rules and scaling up

Doroseva also believes it is necessary to agree on common rules for using the symbol and on the actions of transport workers. In the future, this approach could be extended to shopping malls, stadiums, concert venues and tourist attractions.

Context: a sign for large families

Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Transport stated that a new road sign for parking by large families is planned to be enshrined in the Traffic Rules: the agency will prepare the necessary amendments by the end of 2026. The appearance of the sign has already been determined — the design was chosen together with citizens through a public vote. In addition, regions were recommended to allow families with four or more children to park two cars free of charge.

Significance of the initiative

The initiative concerns families with children who use transport: according to the facts described by the sources, today a child encounters different ways to get help in different places, and a single symbol is meant to eliminate this fragmentation. The practical consequence is that parents will only need to explain once to their child which sign to look for. At the same time, the publications do not specify when the sign may appear or what it will look like: neither the timeline nor the design for this initiative has been named yet.
