Slovakia confirmed the resumption of talks with Russia

Slovakia has officially confirmed the resumption of talks with Russia at the level of the intergovernmental commission. Deputy Speaker of the Slovak parliament Tibor Gašpar told TASS that the meeting will take place on October 26 in Moscow. The meeting is expected to discuss prospects for economic, scientific and technical cooperation between the two states. According to Gašpar, the commission's return to work will allow the sides to identify possible areas of interaction, but the scale of joint projects will depend on the agreements reached, current legislation and Bratislava's international obligations.

How the format's revival was prepared

Gašpar emphasized the importance of regular consultations between specialists of the two countries: in his words, such a format helps find common ground and maintain channels of communication even in a difficult international environment. The commission's work was suspended in 2022, and now Moscow and Bratislava have again begun preparing joint meetings. As Life.ru recalls, on May 13, 2026, the government of Slovakia appointed Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Juraj Blanár as the commission's chairman on its side, and on August 20 the diplomat discussed organizational matters with his Russian co-chair — Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov. The agreement to restore the format was reached back in 2025 during talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

What is known about the upcoming meeting

Life.ru previously reported that Russia and Slovakia are preparing to hold the first meeting of the intergovernmental commission in five years. Back on October 16, the Russian government announced the meeting in Moscow and named its participants. The upcoming session will be the 22nd, while the previous talks in this format took place in November 2021 in Bratislava. Among the main topics of discussion were trade and economic relations, energy, and cultural and humanitarian ties. The sides may also pay special attention to Russian gas supplies, since Slovakia is interested in maintaining energy cooperation with Moscow. The concrete outcomes of the meeting and the list of agreements signed have not yet been disclosed — they will become clear from the results of the October 26 meeting.

Slovakia challenged the ban on Russian gas and is preparing talks with the European Commission
