Fatal collision at a shop entrance
A man in his 30s died after a car drove through the entrance of a Lidl supermarket in Wolverhampton. Police arrived at the shop on Finchfield Hill shortly before 18:00 BST on Friday. According to West Midlands Police, the man was pronounced dead at the scene, while a number of other people sustained injuries and received treatment. The death, a police spokesperson said, is not being treated as criminal, and officers remain at the scene assisting firefighters and medics in carrying out checks.
What happened inside the shop
The car smashed through the entrance, shattering the glass, and by Friday evening it was still just inside the doors while emergency services worked at the scene. A witness to the incident, Tina Bonev, described what happened as 'absolutely terrifying' and spoke of 'shock and confusion' after the crash. In footage provided to the BBC by eyewitnesses, shoppers stand just metres from the car; debris from the vehicle and goods from the shelves are scattered across the floor, an alarm is sounding, a man shouts: 'Everyone, get out of the shop,' and a woman's voice asks whether anyone knows first aid.
Emergency response and road closures
West Midlands Fire Service said it dispatched four crews to the scene at 17:51 BST, and by 20:05 BST two were still there. Police cordoned off Finchfield Road West and Finchfield Hill, and a fire engine was parked outside the supermarket. According to police, the roads were expected to remain closed for some time, and drivers were advised to use alternative routes. Cars remained in the Lidl car park, and the shop's entrance, according to reports from the scene, was damaged.
Context and what remains unknown
The incident struck an ordinary grocery store in the residential Finchfield area at rush hour: eyewitnesses described panic among shoppers, and the road closures disrupted traffic across the neighbourhood. The cause of the crash and the condition of those injured were not disclosed in the reports; police only confirmed that the man's death is not being treated as criminal, and continued working at the scene alongside firefighters and medics. It remains unknown who was driving the car and exactly how many people were injured — sources give only the phrase 'a number of people'.
