A Welsh artist at the top of the British chart
Jamie Miller, originally from the Pontprennau area of Cardiff, has become the first Welsh artist in 15 years to top the UK Singles Chart — with the viral hit Babydoll. According to the Official Charts Company, the 29-year-old singer narrowly overtook Tate McRae and her single Housewife on Friday. The last Welsh artist with a number-one single was Sian Evans, featured on DJ Fresh's track 'Louder' in 2011. Miller also became the first Welsh male solo artist at the top of the chart in 41 years — since Shakin' Stevens with the 1985 Christmas hit 'Merry Christmas Everyone'.
The path to success through TikTok
Babydoll was released on 7 August — a few months earlier, Miller said, he was seriously considering leaving music. The track took off after actress Jennifer Love Hewitt posted a video featuring the song. A dance trend launched on TikTok, the song topped the US iTunes pop chart and earned Miller his first entry on the US Billboard Hot 100. Last week the track fell just short of the top spot.
Career from The Voice to an album
Miller began his career almost ten years ago at the age of 19, finishing third in the sixth season of The Voice UK. He told BBC Wales that his father works as an Uber driver in Cardiff, and that his love of music began by accident — after auditioning for a school play, he got 'hooked' on singing. Miller also recorded a separate version of Babydoll with Off Campus star Antonio Cipriano — the idea started as a joke on social media. Cipriano called Miller 'one of the best vocalists I have ever heard'. The singer himself said he is proud of the new music and is looking forward to the release of the album and the tour, especially performing in Wales.
The rest of the chart positions
The top five of the singles chart was rounded out by the remix of Olivia Rodrigo's track 'Expectations' featuring Chappell Roan, and Asha's 'Stop The Wedding' at number four. In the albums chart, Irish band Fontaines DC earned their second career number one with the record Dopamine Chamber. According to the chart, it is the third-best opening week for an album in 2026 and the fastest-selling Irish studio album in 15 years — since Snow Patrol's 'Fallen Empires' from 2011.
