Charges Against the State Senator
US Attorney General Todd Blanche announced at a press conference on Thursday that seven people had been arrested or had themselves surrendered to authorities in a case involving an alleged large-scale conspiracy under the RICO law, connected to drug trafficking and money laundering. Among the defendants is Virginia State Senator Lillie Louise Lucas, who holds the post of president pro tempore of the state senate.
Five Counts of Charges
According to Blanche, Lucas faces charges on five counts: racketeering conspiracy, conspiracy to distribute and possess marijuana with intent to distribute, conspiracy to commit money laundering, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and maintaining a drug-involved premises. All defendants are in federal custody, and their first appearances in federal court were expected that same Thursday.
Statement by the FBI Director
FBI Director Kash Patel accused Lucas of allegedly using her public office to protect the alleged criminal operation. 'While serving as a Virginia state senator, instead of upholding the law, as the indictment alleges, she herself broke the law and then used her position of power and the public's trust to protect her own criminal enterprise,' the Anadolu agency quoted Patel as saying. Racketeering conspiracy charges are usually brought under the RICO law, which prosecutors use to pursue alleged coordinated criminal activity.
