Army retakes strategic base
The Sudanese army on Thursday morning regained control of the Bakori military base southeast of Damazin, the capital of the Blue Nile region, as well as the Uklili area in the northeastern part of the Kurmuk locality, the Sudan Tribune reported. The information was confirmed by Kurmuk locality commissioner Abdelati Mohamed El Faki in his statement.
Background of the seizure
According to Sudan Tribune, in late August an alliance of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement–North (SPLM-N) captured the strategic bases of Bakori and Sarkam in the localities of Kaysan and Kurmuk respectively. Bakori, located about 70 km east of Damazin, serves as the headquarters of the army's 13th Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division in the Blue Nile region.
Reaction and conflict context
The paramilitary forces gave no immediate comment on reports of the loss of the base. Sudan has been gripped by a bloody conflict between the army and the RSF since April 2023, which, according to the UN, has killed tens of thousands of people, displaced about 13 million, and become one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.
