VAT refund time cut to one day
The UAE has unveiled an artificial intelligence-based platform that reduces the VAT refund period for tourists from approximately nine days to one working day. Director-General of the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) Abdulaziz Al Mulla said the country has become one of the fastest in the world for tourist tax refunds, calling it the result of continuous improvements to the 'smart' service.
Who is behind the platform
The FTA, part of the UAE Ministry of Finance, developed the platform together with Planet, the authorized operator of the tourist VAT refund system in the country. Al Mulla called the launch 'a significant step forward' in the tax refund process and noted that it improves tourists' experience at the final point of contact with the country.

According to Al Mulla, the platform embodies a 'proactive government model' that places the client at the center of service design and relies on integration and data exchange between government bodies and partners. He added that these measures strengthen the UAE's international reputation as a leading destination for tourism and shopping thanks to a safe environment, attractions, diverse events and tourism infrastructure.
Background: VAT refunds for online purchases
The platform emerged after the UAE authorities in 2024 allowed tourists to request VAT refunds for online purchases directly through registered e-commerce platforms: to do so, travelers must provide their travel document details at the time of purchase, before the order is shipped.
