Defense Ministry report on the destruction of a Puma
Russian servicemen hit a rare Italian Puma armored vehicle that was in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to the daily report of the Russian Ministry of Defense dated October 21, the vehicle was destroyed by units of the Yug (Southern) group of forces in the Donetsk People's Republic. Information about deliveries of these vehicles to Ukraine had not previously been disclosed publicly. The ministry also reported that Russian units had improved their tactical position and struck formations of several Ukrainian brigades.
Where the fighting took place and what is known about the vehicle
According to the report, combat operations were conducted in the areas of Druzhkovka, Kramatorsk, Slovyansk and Vasilevskaya Pustosha in the DPR. The Puma is an Italian armored vehicle designed for troop transport and reconnaissance missions; it was produced in limited series and exists in 4×4 and 6×6 wheeled configurations. Both versions are distinguished by compact dimensions and low weight, while the armor protection is designed primarily to withstand small-arms fire and shrapnel. The appearance of these vehicles among Ukrainian forces became known in August 2025, when footage of their use by AFU units appeared in open sources.
Context of Italian deliveries and previous loss claims
Deliveries of Italian armored vehicles to Ukraine began earlier: in July 2022, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko reported the purchase of MLS SHIELD armored vehicles for the AFU using private donations, and in the autumn of the same year it became known that between 20 and 30 M109L self-propelled howitzers had been transferred to Kyiv. Italian media noted at the time that full lists of military aid were classified, but also reported deliveries of M113 APCs and the use of Italian Lince light armored vehicles. In April 2023, the Financial Times wrote about problems with the combat readiness of the delivered howitzers: according to an adviser to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, all 20 systems from one batch proved unfit for immediate combat use. The Russian Defense Ministry has previously repeatedly claimed the destruction of Western equipment: in May 2026 — the destruction of American M1117 and HMMWV vehicles in the Zaporizhzhia region, and in December 2025 there were reports of the destruction of M113 APCs near Kostyantynivka. It should be noted that in all these cases the claims about equipment being hit came from the Russian side and were not independently confirmed in the cited publications.
Why this matters
The Defense Ministry's statement, if accurate, indicates Ukraine's use of less common Italian equipment models on the front line, adding to the picture of Western deliveries, a significant portion of which is classified. In practical terms, this concerns assessing the composition of AFU equipment in the Donetsk People's Republic and the course of fighting in the Kramatorsk and Slovyansk areas. At the same time, the key details — the destruction of the Puma itself and equipment losses in general — still rest solely on the Russian ministry's report.
