Comparison of the energy mixes of 18 countries based on 2025 results
Naked Science has prepared an infographic based on data from the Global Electricity Review 2026 by the organization Ember. It compares the full results of 2025 across 18 countries. The figures reflect the share of each source in electricity produced within the country, and do not mean the installed capacity of power plants or total consumption of all types of energy.
Leaders by individual sources
In France, nuclear power plants provided 68.79% of all electricity. In Norway, the share of hydropower reached 90.03%. Hydroelectric plants also provided more than half of generation in Canada (52.84%) and Brazil (51.78%). In Denmark, the largest source was wind, with a share of 57.69%.
Gas, coal, and solar with wind
In the USA, gas provided 39.99% of electricity generation. In Russia, gas is also the leading source — 44.70%; the other major sources are coal — 18.40%, nuclear power — 18.33%, and hydropower — 16.74%. In China, the share of coal was 54.35%, while the combined share of solar and wind generation reached 21.81%. In India, 70.82% of electricity, and in the Republic of South Africa 81.36%, is generated from coal.
