Rebel claims about federal forces' losses
Tigrayan rebels said on Tuesday that during two days of fighting in the northern region of Tigray they had destroyed more than 1,500 Ethiopian soldiers. TPLF official Negash Hiluf said in a video briefing broadcast by the opposition Tigray Media Corporation that the Tigray Defense Forces intercepted federal army units near Menre in central Tigray, inflicting 1,511 killed and 1,050 wounded. According to the TPLF, government troops were trying to advance toward the town of Adet. The rebels also claimed the destruction of 11 fighters of the 'Tigray Peace Forces' — an armed group aligned with the federal authorities. Ethiopia and its military have not yet publicly responded; the figures could not be verified independently.
Abiy Ahmed's warning to Eritrea
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, in an interview with the state-owned Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation, accused Eritrea of supporting Tigrayan forces seeking to destabilize the country. 'I believe that choosing the role of a host to enemies instead of a development partner is unprofitable. However, the consequences of ignoring our calls will be very, very, very severe,' he said. Abiy stressed that cooperation between neighbors offers a better future than military confrontation and urged Asmara to prioritize economic development and peaceful relations.
Context of the conflict
Ethiopia has repeatedly accused Eritrean forces of crossing the northern border and aiding the TPLF — accusations Asmara rejects. Eritrea, in turn, accuses Ethiopia of seeking to seize its Red Sea port of Assab, which heightens fears of a broader regional conflict. The rebels' statements followed reports of the Ethiopian army withdrawing from Adwa and Rama near the Eritrean border after TPLF attacks. Earlier, federal forces, in an offensive launched after large-scale fighting resumed on September 23, took Mekelle — the regional capital — and a number of other towns. Addis Ababa announced a six-month interim administration of Tigray to consolidate federal control and restore public services. The TPLF is also part of the 'Alliance for Survival' — a coalition of seven armed and political groups formed in September to oppose Abiy's government.
