Major Revolut outage

The British neobank Revolut faced a large-scale outage on Tuesday morning which, according to the company, affected 'several services'. Thousands of users reported problems: some customers could not make certain payments or access their funds through the app.

Scale of the disruption

The outage monitoring service Downdetector recorded more than 1,500 complaints about Revolut shortly after 08:00 BST. The company's status page stated that a number of services were 'partially unavailable', including card payments, transfers, ATM cash withdrawals and the customer support service.

Company response

'We are currently experiencing a disruption affecting several services,' a Revolut spokesperson told the BBC, adding: 'We can confirm that all of our customers' money and data are safe.' According to the spokesperson, the company has been working to resolve the issue since it was detected in the morning and apologises to all affected customers for the inconvenience.

User reaction and context

On social media, a number of users criticised the company over the outage, saying they could not access their funds, make payments or contact support. Revolut is one of the so-called neobanks that emerged as competitors to traditional banks with a digital approach to financial services. According to the company's website, it has more than 80 million customers worldwide.
