Visit to Tehran
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will visit Tehran on Monday for talks on bilateral relations, as well as regional and international developments, Iran's state broadcasting body IRIB reported, citing Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei.
Meeting with Pezeshkian and Purpose of the Visit
According to IRIB, Lavrov also plans to meet with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Baghaei noted that the visit is part of ongoing bilateral consultations and efforts to implement the agreements between the two countries.
Context of Russian-Iranian Relations
In recent years, Iran and Russia have strengthened political, economic and military cooperation against the backdrop of Western sanctions imposed on both countries. In January 2025, Pezeshkian and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a 20-year comprehensive strategic partnership treaty in Moscow, covering cooperation in defense, security, energy, trade and transport. The agreement also provides for closer coordination on regional and international issues, but does not establish mutual defense obligations.
